Gumtree MCP server: let your AI agent search UK classifieds

Wield is an MCP server that gives your AI agent one Gumtree tool, gumtree.com/search-listings. The tool searches Gumtree, the UK's classifieds site, for a query near a place. It returns listings with title, price in pounds, location, description, photo and link. You can add a price range, a radius, a category and a sort order. The search runs in your own browser.

What your agent gets

RecipeWhat it doesLoginStatus (7 Nov 2026)
gumtree.com/search-listingsFinds UK listings for a query, with price, location, description, photo and linkNoNo status row yet

The tool takes a required query, for example road bike or sofa. The optional inputs are location, category, distance_miles, min_price, max_price, sort, page and include_featured. location takes a town, an area or a postcode, such as london, manchester or SW1A 1AA. The default is uk, which means everywhere in the UK.

The category input takes all (the default), for-sale, cars-vans-motorbikes, property, jobs, services, pets or community. The sort input takes relevance (the default), newest, price_low or price_high. Gumtree applies price filters only within a category, so when you give a price range without a category, the recipe searches for-sale.

Each listing has id, title, price_gbp, price_text, location, description, featured, urgent, image and url. The result also has total, the number from the page heading, such as the ad count for a search, and page.

Featured (paid) ads are dropped by default. Set include_featured to true to keep them, marked with featured. Urgent ads are kept and marked with urgent.

How a request flows

  1. You ask your agent: "Find road bikes near Manchester under £300, newest first."
  2. The agent calls find_recipe, then run with gumtree.com/search-listings, query set to road bike, location set to manchester, max_price set to 300 and sort set to newest.
  3. wield-mcp passes the run through the local bridge to the Wield extension.
  4. The extension sends the request from your browser, so it carries the session you already have.
  5. The listings go back to your agent. Nothing passes through wield.run.

What leaves your computer

A search makes one request to www.gumtree.com, for one results page, as the site serves it to a visitor. The recipe is read only. It never replies to a seller. Wield logs the request on your computer only, with method, host, path, status and timing, and never logs bodies or query values. Telemetry is off by default. Wield never reads, copies or sends your cookies or passwords.

Gumtree's terms, in plain words

Gumtree's robots.txt has no rules for AI agents, as checked on 7 November 2026. It has no group for Claude-User, ClaudeBot or anthropic-ai, and no Content-Signal line. We have not reviewed Gumtree's terms for automated access yet. The recipe is user-initiated: you start each search, each call runs one search in your own browser, and it is not for bulk collection. The recipe makes no purchases. Replies to sellers stay on gumtree.com. This is not legal advice. Read Gumtree's terms yourself before you use this recipe in any other way.

Limits and what is not working yet

  • Browser only. Gumtree's bot management answered server requests with its own status after six requests in about ten minutes. Expect server health checks to be blocked, so the recipe runs only in your own browser.
  • Bot checks stop the run. If Gumtree shows a check, Wield stops with site_challenge and asks you to solve it in your own tab. Wield does not solve bot checks.
  • No status yet. The recipe has no status row. The example passed one live check. Other parameter combinations are untested.
  • Read only. The recipe finds listings. It does not reply to sellers or buy.
  • Featured ads are hidden. Set include_featured to see them.
  • Run limits apply. A run has at most 12 steps, 40 requests, 5 MB per response and 60 seconds.

FAQ

Can the agent reply to a seller or buy?

No. The recipe only searches. Open the listing's url to reply to the seller on gumtree.com.

Are the prices in pounds?

Yes. price_gbp holds the amount in pounds, and price_text holds the price as the page shows it.

Does it need a Gumtree login?

No. The recipe needs no login, and search works without an account.

Does the search work from a server?

Not reliably. Gumtree's bot management answered server requests with its own status after six requests in about ten minutes, so the recipe runs in your browser.

Which AI apps work with it?

Any MCP client. npx -y wield-mcp init sets up Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. Other MCP clients work with the standard stdio config.

Where do the results go?

To your agent, on your own computer. The results never pass through wield.run.
