What you need

  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex.
  • A Chromium browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera or Chromium) with the Wield extension.
  • wield-mcp. Run npx -y wield-mcp init. The install page and the quick start cover the details.

You don't need a Gumtree account to search.

Ask your agent

Give the keyword, the place and the price range. Example:

You: Search Gumtree for a road bike near Manchester under £300, newest first.

Claude calls find_recipe to find the recipe, then run with the parameters. For the order of results, ask for "newest first", "cheapest first" or "most expensive first". Those map to newest, price_low and price_high. Leave the order out to get the site's default relevance order.

Params: what to put where

Your agent fills these in from your sentence.

ParamRequiredWhat to put in it
queryyesWhat to search for, such as road bike or sofa.
locationnoA town, an area or a postcode, such as london, manchester or SW1A 1AA. The default uk searches everywhere in the UK.
distance_milesnoRadius around the location: 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, 50, 75 or 100.
min_price and max_pricenoPrice limits in pounds.
categorynoall (default), for-sale, cars-vans-motorbikes, property, jobs, services, pets or community.
sortnorelevance (default), newest, price_low or price_high.
pagenoResults page. The default is 1.
include_featurednotrue keeps Featured (paid) ads, marked. The default is false.

Gumtree applies a price range only within a category. If you set a price and no category, the recipe uses for-sale.

What comes back

The result has query, location, total, page and listings. total is the count from the page heading, such as "1,779 ads for road bike in London". It can be null when the page shows no count.

Each listing has id, title, price_gbp, price_text, location, description, featured, urgent, image and url. featured marks paid placements, and urgent marks ads the seller flagged as urgent. Open url to see the full ad on gumtree.com.

What leaves your computer

The recipe makes one request to www.gumtree.com, for one results page. The request goes out from your browser with the session you already have. Nothing passes through wield.run. Wield logs the request on your computer only, with method, host, path, status and timing. It never logs bodies or query values. Telemetry is off by default.

Limits

  • Gumtree's bot management answered server requests with its own status after six requests in about ten minutes. Expect server health checks to be blocked, so this recipe runs only in your own browser.
  • If Gumtree shows a check, Wield stops with site_challenge and asks you to solve it in your own tab.
  • The recipe is read only. It never replies to a seller.
  • The recipe has no status row yet. The example passed one live check. Other parameter combinations are untested.

Gumtree's terms, in plain words

Gumtree's robots.txt has no rules for AI agents, as checked on 7 November 2026. It has no group for Claude-User, ClaudeBot or anthropic-ai, and no Content-Signal line. We have not reviewed Gumtree's terms for automated access yet. The recipe is user-initiated: you start each search, each call runs one search in your own browser, and it is not for bulk collection. The recipe makes no purchases. Replies to sellers stay on gumtree.com. This is not legal advice. Read Gumtree's terms yourself before you use this recipe in any other way.

FAQ

Can Claude reply to a seller?

No. The recipe only searches. Open the listing's url to reply to the seller on gumtree.com.

Why does the search use for-sale when I give a price?

Gumtree applies price filters only within a category. When you set a price and no category, the recipe uses for-sale. Set category yourself to search another one.

Does it need a login?

No. Search works without a Gumtree account.

Not by default. Ask for include_featured to keep them. They are marked with featured.
