SpareRoom MCP server: let your AI agent search UK room adverts

Wield is an MCP server that gives your AI agent one SpareRoom tool, spareroom.co.uk/search-rooms. The tool searches SpareRoom, the UK flatshare site, for rooms offered in a town or London area. It returns each room with the headline rent and period, area, postcode district, property type, rooms in the property, whether it is available now, the age of the advert, the advertiser and the link. The search runs in your own browser.

spareroom.co.uk/search-roomsFinds rooms to rent in UK flatshares by town or London area, with rent, area, availability and advertiserNoOK, 4 of 4 checks, 1 request

The tool takes a required location, the name SpareRoom uses, for example london, manchester, bristol or hackney. The optional inputs are min_rent and max_rent in pounds per month, sort and page. The sort input takes default (the default), newest, price_low or price_high. Each page holds 10 rooms.

Each room has id, title, rent_gbp, period, area, postcode_district, property_type, rooms_in_property, available_now, days_old, advertiser, promoted, photo and url. The result also carries location and page. period says pcm (per calendar month) or pw (per week). advertiser shows whether the advert comes from a landlord, an agent or a flatmate.

How a request flows

  1. You ask your agent: "Find rooms to rent in London for up to 1,200 pounds a month."
  2. The agent calls find_recipe, then run with spareroom.co.uk/search-rooms, location set to london and max_rent set to 1200.
  3. wield-mcp passes the run through the local bridge to the Wield extension.
  4. The extension sends the request from a spareroom.co.uk tab in your browser, so it carries your own browser session.
  5. The rooms go back to your agent. Nothing passes through wield.run.

In our check on 7 November 2026, London rooms up to 1,200 pounds passed all 4 checks in one request, in 0.4 seconds. A Manchester search sorted by newest, on page 2, returned 11 rooms, each with rent, area, postcode district and advertiser.

What leaves your computer

A search makes one request to www.spareroom.co.uk, for one search page, the same page a visitor sees. The recipe sends no messages to advertisers and needs no account. Wield logs the request on your computer only, with method, host, path, status and timing, and never logs bodies or query values. Telemetry is off by default. Wield never reads, copies or sends your cookies or passwords.

SpareRoom's terms, in plain words

The recipe loads one search page per call, the same page a visitor sees. It sends no messages to advertisers and needs no account. SpareRoom's robots.txt has no rules for AI agents, as checked on 7 November 2026. We have not reviewed SpareRoom's terms for automated access yet, so read them yourself before you use this recipe in any other way. This is not legal advice. The search is user-initiated: you start it yourself, in your own browser, one search per call. It runs no bulk jobs and it makes no purchases.

Limits and what is not working yet

  • Read only. The recipe finds adverts. Messaging an advertiser happens on SpareRoom, if you choose to do it.
  • Placeholder adverts with price_low. The price-low sort also surfaces placeholder adverts at £1 to £2, as the site does. Check the rent before you act on a result.
  • Paid featured adverts are kept. They are marked promoted, so you can see which ones they are.
  • Run limits apply. A run has at most 12 steps, 40 requests, 5 MB per response and 60 seconds.

FAQ

Can the agent message a landlord?

No. The recipe only searches. Open the room's url on SpareRoom to get in touch yourself.

Does it need a SpareRoom account?

No. The search works without an account.

Why does a search show rooms at £1 or £2?

The price_low sort also shows placeholder adverts at £1 to £2, as the site does. The recipe keeps them, so compare the rent before you contact anyone.

Which AI apps work with it?

Any MCP client. npx -y wield-mcp init sets up Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. Other MCP clients work with the standard stdio config.
