Wield vs ChatGPT agent: what each does and when to pick it
OpenAI's help center describes ChatGPT agent as working in a virtual browser. When a task needs a login, the agent pauses and asks you to take over that browser. Wield runs recipes in your own browser, with your own session, and uses no model call per run. The main difference is where the browser lives and who holds the login.
Dated note, 7 November 2026: a newer version of OpenAI's help article says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and points to ChatGPT Work and cloud browser use. Check OpenAI's help center for the current state. This page describes the article as we read it.
What ChatGPT agent is
According to OpenAI's help article, the agent runs in a virtual browser. If a task needs a login, it pauses and asks you to take over the virtual browser. Screenshots are not captured while you control it. Cookies persist across sessions, like a normal browser.

| Wield | ChatGPT agent (per OpenAI's help article) | |

| Logins | Your existing session in your browser | You take over the virtual browser to log in |
| Cookies | Never read, copied or sent by Wield | Persist across sessions in the virtual browser |
| Model cost per run | $0 | Model calls for each run |

Logins and your data
Wield keeps credentials on your device. Passwords and cookies never leave your computer. Results go from the extension to wield-mcp and then to your AI app, never through wield.run. The design keeps credentials and browsing data on your device.
ChatGPT agent handles a login in the virtual browser that you take over. That is a structural difference. Your login happens in a browser the vendor hosts, while Wield uses the browser you already use.
When ChatGPT agent is the better choice

When Wield is the better choice
- You repeat a task on a supported site.
- You want to use logins that already exist in your own browser.
- You want the tools in your MCP client of choice.
- You want no model cost per run.
