Wield vs Claude in Chrome: what each does and when to pick it

Claude in Chrome is an extension from Anthropic that lets Claude read, click and navigate websites alongside you. Wield gives any MCP client fixed tools for specific sites. A Wield recipe runs in your own browser with no model in the loop. Both work in your own Chrome. The choice depends on whether you want a model to decide each step or a recipe to run it.

What Claude in Chrome is

You can start Claude in Chrome from the Chrome side panel, from Cowork or from Claude Code. It works on the tab you are on and can fill in forms. It is available on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans, and Enterprise admins have to enable it. Anthropic's support article calls the product still risky and links a safety guide. Its extension permissions include debugger, scripting, tabs, tabGroups and webNavigation.

Logins and your data

Wield uses the session your browser already has. It never reads or copies cookies or passwords. Results go from the extension to wield-mcp and then to your AI app, never through wield.run. Any write needs your Allow, and the window lists every request it would send.

This comparison has no sourced detail on how Claude in Chrome treats logged-in sessions. Check Anthropic's documentation before you rely on it for an account-sensitive task.

Where they overlap

Both act in your own Chrome, and both keep you in the loop for the actions you care about. They are not rivals. You can use Claude in Chrome for open-ended browsing and Wield for the tasks you repeat on sites it supports.

When Claude in Chrome is the better choice

  • You want Claude to adapt on a page it has never seen.
  • You want a model to act alongside you while you browse.
  • You already have a plan that includes it.

When Wield is the better choice

  • You repeat the same task, and you want the same structured result each time.
  • You want no model cost per run.
  • You want the same tools in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex.

FAQ

Do I have to pick one?

No. Wield and Claude in Chrome solve different parts of the job. Pick the one that matches the task in front of you.

Does Wield click through pages like Claude in Chrome?

No. When a recipe runs, no model is in the loop. A recipe is a small public JSON file that describes the requests a site's own pages make.

What stops Wield from writing without my permission?

A write stops before its first write request. Wield shows you the site, the task and every request with its body. Deny is the default, and two minutes without an answer counts as deny.
