Wield vs Anthropic computer use: what each does and when to pick it
Anthropic's computer use tool lets Claude control a computer through screenshots and input actions. You run it in an environment you provide, such as a virtual display or a Docker container. Wield does not operate desktop apps. It calls fixed site recipes in your own browser, and no model is in the loop when a recipe runs. Computer use suits open-ended desktop work. Wield suits repeated tasks on sites.
What computer use is
Computer use is a client toolset. You declare it, and your application executes every action. Claude never connects to your environment directly. The toolset has 17 member tools. Anthropic's quickstart uses Docker. Each screenshot costs roughly 1,000 to 1,800 input tokens. Anthropic's docs also say that for tasks inside web pages, a browser-focused tool is usually a better fit.
Side-by-side
| Wield | Anthropic computer use | |
|---|---|---|
| What Claude controls | Fixed site tools built from recipes | The screen, through screenshots and input actions |
| Where it runs | Your browser, through the extension | An environment you provide, for example Docker |
| Cost per step | None: no model in the loop | About 1,000 to 1,800 input tokens per screenshot |
| Logins | Your existing browser session; never read or sent | Anthropic advises keeping login info away from Claude |
| Scope | Sites with a recipe | Whatever the environment shows |
Logins and your data
Anthropic's documentation recommends five things. Isolate the environment in a dedicated VM or container. Keep account login information and sensitive data away from Claude. Limit internet access with an allowlist. Keep a human in the loop for consequential actions. Watch for prompt injection.
Wield follows a different model. It uses the session your browser already has, and it never reads cookies or passwords, so you do not type credentials into the agent. Passwords and cookies never leave your computer. Results go through wield-mcp to your AI app, never through wield.run. A write needs your Allow.
When computer use is the better choice
- The task spans desktop apps or several applications at once.
- You want a model to drive an environment you control.
- The task is open-ended and the steps are not known in advance.
When Wield is the better choice
- You repeat the same task on a supported site.
- You want structured results instead of screenshots.
- You want no model cost per step.
- You want your logins to stay in your own browser.
FAQ
Is computer use insecure?
This page makes no such claim. Anthropic documents safety recommendations, listed above, and asks you to isolate the environment, limit access and keep a human in the loop.
Can Wield control my desktop?
No. Wield does not operate desktop apps. Its recipes send requests from a browser tab on a supported site.
How much do screenshots cost?
Anthropic's docs put each screenshot at roughly 1,000 to 1,800 input tokens. For model rates, see Anthropic's pricing page.
