Akamai Bot Manager

Akamai Bot Manager is a commercial product from Akamai. It classifies web traffic as human, known bot or unknown automation. Based on that classification, the site can allow a request, challenge it or block it. An automated client that meets a challenge sees a check page instead of the data it asked for.

How Akamai Bot Manager works

The product scores each request and assigns it a category. The site owner then configures an action for each category. This page does not describe the detection methods, because that detail would help someone defeat the product.

Why it matters for AI agents

Sites that run bot protection can challenge automated clients, including browser agents. The agent gets a check page, and the task fails before it reaches the data.

Wield and Akamai Bot Manager

When a site shows a check, such as a CAPTCHA or an "are you human" page, Wield stops with site_challenge. It then asks you to solve the check in your own tab. Wield does not solve or work around bot protection.

In our runs, bot protection blocked the automated cloud browser on ten sites, including bahn.de, Zalando and Walmart. We do not attribute those blocks to a specific vendor here. See the benchmark for the method.

FAQ

Why does a site block my agent?

The site's bot protection classified the traffic as automation and chose a challenge or a block. The site sets that rule, and the agent cannot see it. The result is a check page or an error instead of data.

Can Wield pass Akamai checks?

No. Wield does not solve or work around bot protection. When a check appears, Wield stops and you solve it yourself in your own browser tab.
