Let Claude search IMDb movies and TV shows by title

To let Claude search IMDb titles, install Wield and ask for a title, optionally with a year or a type. For example: "Find IMDb movies called Dune from 2021 and show the year and the lead actors." Claude runs the imdb.com/search-titles recipe in your own browser and returns up to 8 matches, best first, with year, type, lead actors, IMDb link and popularity rank. No login is needed.

What you need

  • Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client.
  • A Chromium browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera) with the Wield extension.
  • wield-mcp. Run npx -y wield-mcp init, or use the one-click Claude Desktop bundle on install.

For the full setup, follow the quick start.

Ask your agent

Give a title or part of one. Add a type if you want only movies or only series. Claude calls find_recipe to find the recipe, then run with the parameters.

You: Find IMDb movies called Dune from 2021 and show the year, the two lead actors and the IMDb link.

For that prompt, Claude runs imdb.com/search-titles with query set to dune 2021 and type set to movie, then reads the matches from the result.

Params: what to put where

ParamRequiredWhat to put in it
queryyesA title or part of one, for example the matrix, breaking bad or dune 2021.
typenoOne IMDb type: any (default), movie, tvSeries, tvMiniSeries, tvMovie, tvSpecial, short, video, videoGame, musicVideo or podcastSeries.

Use any to search every kind of title. Pick a single type to narrow the matches.

What comes back

The result has query and titles. Each title has title, year, years, type, type_label, stars, popularity_rank, image and url.

stars holds the two lead actors. When you search for a person, it holds that person's best-known work instead. url opens the title on IMDb, and image is a link to the poster. popularity_rank is IMDb's own rank, so your agent can sort by it.

What leaves your computer

The recipe makes one request to v3.sg.media-imdb.com, the host IMDb's search box calls. The request goes out from your browser, and nothing passes through wield.run. Wield logs the request on your computer only, without bodies or query values. Passwords and cookies stay on your computer.

Limits and terms

  • IMDb's Conditions of Use prohibit data mining, robots and screen scraping without written consent. The robots.txt on www.imdb.com disallows all bots. Wield runs the recipe only when you ask, one title lookup per call, from your own browser. The scope is set: you start each search, one search per call, from your own browser, with no bulk collection and no purchases. This is not legal advice.
  • The recipe makes one request per call. It does not fetch title pages, ratings or bulk data. Do not loop it or run it for many titles at once.
  • The recipe is read only. It never changes anything on IMDb.
  • Status on 7 Nov 2026 is "ok": 5 of 5 checks in 1 request and about 250 ms. The checks covered a series search and a search with no results.
  • A run has at most 12 steps, 40 requests, 5 MB per response and 60 seconds.

Check IMDb's conditions yourself before you automate anything else.
