MCP server vs browser agent: which should you use?

Use an MCP server when a fixed tool exists for the task. Use a browser agent when the page has no tool and the steps change from one visit to the next. In our benchmark, Wield's MCP recipes completed 85% of runs, with a median of 0.9 s and no model cost. A browser agent completed 52% of runs, with a median of 78 s and $0.184 per run. Results are preliminary, as of 7 November 2026.

What the benchmark measured

  • 24 tasks on 21 sites. Each task has 3 fixed queries, and each query runs 3 times per side.
  • Recipe side: the recipe runs through wield-mcp and the Wield extension in an everyday browser. No model is in the loop.
  • Browser-agent side: Browser Use 0.13.14 with Claude Sonnet 5.5, stock settings, in a fresh headless Chromium with an empty profile.
  • Both sides must pass the same machine check for each task.
  • The benchmark is still running. Full method is on the benchmark page.

On the median time across all tasks, the recipe side was about 85 times faster: 908 ms against 77,577 ms.

When the MCP server wins

  • The site has a recipe. Wield's registry has public recipes for the sites listed on the sites page.
  • The output must be structured. A recipe returns fields such as prices, slots or listings, not a page to read.
  • Speed and cost matter. A recipe run takes about a second in our runs and uses no model tokens.
  • The site blocks cloud-style browsers. In our runs, 10 sites did. The recipe passed on 7 of them.

When the browser agent wins

  • No recipe exists yet. A browser agent can try any site. You can request a recipe for a site you need.
  • The steps change. A browser agent can adapt when a page layout differs. A recipe covers the requests it was written for.
  • Recipes miss. In the benchmark, the Zalando recipe failed 9 of 9 runs, ImmoScout24 failed 2 of 2, mobile.de passed 5 of 9, and Airbnb passed 8 of 9. A browser agent can be the fallback for those tasks.

Wield is not a browser agent. It is the layer an agent calls. Agents still help with the parts recipes do not cover.

FAQ

Is an MCP server always faster than a browser agent?

Not for every task. In our benchmark, recipes were faster at the median across all 24 tasks. The comparison only covers tasks where a recipe exists. For a site without a recipe, a browser agent is the only option.

Does a recipe use model tokens?

The recipe run itself uses no model, so the run costs no LLM tokens. Your AI app still uses its own model to read your request and choose the tool. Wield does not add a model charge.

Can I use both?

Yes. Use the recipe for sites it covers, and let your agent fall back to a browser for the rest. The benchmark compares the two on the same tasks, so you can see where each one passed.

Which should I start with?

Start with the MCP server for the sites you use most, if they have a recipe. Install with npx -y wield-mcp init, then check the install guide.
