Set up Wield in Windsurf

Yes. Windsurf Cascade supports MCP servers. Add a wield entry under mcpServers in the JSON file at ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json, with command npx and arguments -y and wield-mcp. Cascade can use at most 100 tools at a time across all servers, and you can toggle tools per server on the settings page. The npx -y wield-mcp init command does not set up Windsurf, so edit the file by hand.

Updated

Does Windsurf run local MCP servers?

Yes. Cascade, the Windsurf agent, supports MCP servers that run as local commands. The Windsurf docs say Cascade can access at most 100 tools at a time. That limit counts tools across all of your MCP servers, so check the total when you add a server. Wield exposes a small number of tools, but the limit still applies.

Config file and location

Windsurf reads its MCP servers from a global file:

~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json

The Wield snippet

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wield": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "wield-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Verify this snippet against Windsurf's docs before you rely on it. The docs site now redirects to docs.devin.ai, and we could not confirm the exact text from the current page.

Keep any servers that are already in the file, and add wield next to them inside mcpServers.

Check that it works

  1. Open the MCP settings page in Windsurf. Confirm that wield is listed and turned on.
  2. If you hit the 100-tool limit, turn off the tools you do not use on that page.
  3. In a terminal, run npx -y wield-mcp check. It runs one read-only sample through your browser and ends with "Wield is ready".
  4. Ask Cascade for a Wield task, for example "Use Wield to find a train from Berlin to Munich tomorrow morning."

Gotchas

  • init does not cover Windsurf. init sets up Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Codex only.
  • The 100-tool cap. Each MCP server adds its tools to the same pool. Turn off what you do not need.
  • Absolute paths. If npx is not found, use the absolute path to npx or node on your computer. wield-mcp doctor prints the path.
  • Extension and bridge. The MCP entry alone is not enough. Install the Wield extension and bridge from /install.
  • Writes wait for you. A booking or message shows an Allow window before its first write request. Deny is the default.

FAQ

Does init add Wield to Windsurf?

No. Add the entry by hand as shown above, or follow the quick start for the other steps.

Do Wield's tools count toward the 100-tool limit?

Yes. The limit applies across all MCP servers. Wield exposes few tools, but you can turn off the ones you do not use on the settings page.

Does Windsurf need the browser extension too?

Yes. Recipes run in a Chromium browser through the Wield extension and the bridge. Install Wield to set up both.

What if the tools still do not show up?

Run npx -y wield-mcp doctor. It checks each link in the chain and prints a fix for each problem. Then check that wield is turned on in the Windsurf MCP settings and that the 100-tool limit is not already full.

Where are the Wield logs?

Wield logs every request on your computer only, in ~/.wield/logs. The logs keep the method, host, path, status and timing of each request. They never contain bodies, query values, parameters or results.
