Set up Wield in Codex

Yes. Codex supports local stdio MCP servers. Codex uses TOML, not JSON. Add a [mcp_servers.wield] table with command npx and arguments -y and wield-mcp to ~/.codex/config.toml, or run codex mcp add wield -- npx -y wield-mcp. Then check with codex mcp list. The ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension share this config.

Updated

Does Codex run local MCP servers?

Yes. Codex starts local MCP servers over stdio. The ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension share the same config, so one entry works in all three. Wield runs as a local process with no network port. Codex launches it, and it reaches your browser through the local bridge.

Config file and location

Codex reads two TOML locations:

LevelFileApplies
User~/.codex/config.tomlIn all your projects
Project.codex/config.tomlOnly in trusted projects

A project-scoped config applies only when the project is trusted. Use the user file for Wield if you want it everywhere.

The Wield snippet

The CLI command adds the entry for you:

bash
codex mcp add wield -- npx -y wield-mcp

Or add this table to ~/.codex/config.toml:

toml
[mcp_servers.wield]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "wield-mcp"]

Do not paste the JSON snippet from other apps. Codex does not read JSON for this setting.

The simpler route is npx -y wield-mcp init. Answer yes for Codex, and the installer writes the entry and backs up the file first.

Check that it works

  1. Run codex mcp list in a terminal. The wield server should be listed.
  2. In the Codex TUI, run /mcp to see the server.
  3. Run npx -y wield-mcp check. It runs one read-only sample through your browser.
  4. Ask Codex a real question, for example "Which dermatologists in Berlin have a free appointment this week on Doctolib?" See Doctolib MCP server for what the agent calls.

Gotchas

  • TOML only. A JSON block in config.toml will not load. Use the TOML table above.
  • Trusted projects. A .codex/config.toml in a project works only after Codex trusts that project.
  • Extension and bridge. Install the extension and the bridge from /install. The MCP entry alone cannot run recipes.
  • Browser open. Wield runs only while your Chromium browser is open.

FAQ

Does the ChatGPT desktop app use the same setup?

According to the Codex MCP docs, the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension share the same config. Add the entry once and all three can use it. See the Codex MCP docs.

Should I use the user config or the project config?

Use the user file for Wield in all projects. A project file applies only when Codex trusts that project.

Can I use the JSON format from Cursor or Claude Desktop?

No. Codex uses TOML. Copy the TOML table or the CLI command instead.

What if the tools still do not show up?

Run npx -y wield-mcp doctor. It checks Node, the bridge, your browser registration, the extension connection, the recipes, the signatures and your AI apps, and it prints a fix for each problem. If the Codex config is the cause, run codex mcp list to confirm that wield is listed.

Where are the Wield logs?

Wield logs every request on your computer only, in ~/.wield/logs. The logs keep the method, host, path, status and timing of each request. They never contain bodies, query values, parameters or results.
